Said : O believers ! Fasting has been made obligatory to you as it was for the nations before you, so that you may become virtuous. Al Baqrah: 183

This address is especially for the believers. This is a special arrangement for their spiritual training attaining mercy. The obligation of fasting is not merely laborious rather it is a training session for the achievement of special purpose.
Attainment of Piety, is the name of such a state as forbids man from disobedience to Allah SWT and practically he is blessed with the acquisition of the greatness of Allah SWT. Meaning by every action of man bears witness that he is blessed with servitude to Allah SWT. And he is acquainted with the greatness of Allah SWT according to his status. Though fasting is a blessing which bestows the believer with such a relationship to Allah SWT and His Prophet SAW as stops his hand from raising and a foot from walking and not to deviate from the limitations of Allah SWT.
The blessed month of Ramadan is the month of great blessings, mercy and rewards. This blessed month is the chief of all the months due to its blessings and rewards and Allah’s givings. Allah SWT has regarded this month as His month and arranged it according to the nature and temperament of man. That Allah SWT has blessed man with His words by cutting him off from the world and keeping him away from the fair necessities during fixed times. Allah SWT says that this is the month in which He conversed with man, in the pleasure of which He SWT has blessed us with the whole month. When we are forgetting Allah SWT, going away from Him, parting from Him and we are allured by the colours of the world, He SWT has cut our desires off, sanctioned us that leave them during fixed times and be in front of Him. He blessed us with His personal words and conversed with us. He called us and blessed us with the grace of compassion.
The true basis of Ramadan is that it is the blessed month that has been exalted by giving peculiar sanctity and honour. It has been selected because in it The Holy Quran was revealed. The revelation of The Holy Quran began in this month and the whole Holy Quran came to Loh e Mehfouz from Allah SWT. From where it was shifted to the world in Ramadan. The revelation began in this month and kept on constantly. This month is honoured that it enables man to be pure, flexible to listen, comprehend and act according to the commands of Allah SWT. In this month, practically man is trained that Allah SWT is watching him. This is why, where there is a lack of sanctity, guidance is not blessed. Then strive for Ramadan, offer Traweeh, observe fast. If you have to strive, do it for attaining piety, for getting affinity to Allah SWT, for getting His pleasure. If you are blessed with His affinity, heaven will be at your feet. If you deviate from this purpose, how will you be blessed with heaven. Thus , in every night of Ramadan, Traweeh and Tahajjud have their own peculiarity. For the day long avoid the fair matters in the obedience of Allah SWT, it bestows the believer with a peculiar affinity to Allah SWT that He is closer than aorta. But the closeness is another thing and to feel it is another thing. So, fasting activates this sensation that your Lord is close to you. When this sensation progresses then man is able to account for himself. Meaning that the first first decade of Ramadan creates the sensation of the mercy of Allah SWT as it is said in Hadith that the first decade of Ramadan is of divine mercy, in which a flood of mercy arises and the divine mercy is in full swing. Lucky are those who keep their hearts right. If there is some lacking then the crookedness lies in the heart not in the mercy of Allah SWT.
