One such figure is Syed Hassan Ahmad Fareed, who this year completes his silver jubilee—25 years of professional service in the field of social reform.
Since beginning his career in 2001, Hassan has worked across a wide spectrum of development challenges, from health and education to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), governance, and humanitarian response. His journey reflects not only personal growth but also the growth of a sector that has increasingly prioritized community participation, accountability, and inclusivity.
Building Communities, Not Just Projects:
What sets Hassan apart is his focus on people over projects. Whether leading emergency nutrition programs for flood-affected families, supporting WASH initiatives in underserved urban settlements, or training thousands of community members, his approach has been rooted in participation and empowerment. Over the years, he has facilitated the formation of community-based organizations and WASH committees, including one of Pakistan’s first transgender-led WASH committees—an important milestone for inclusivity in development.

Hassan’s career has also been marked by a strong commitment to knowledge-sharing. With more than 40 publications and countless training manuals, case studies, and success stories to his credit, his contribution goes beyond implementation. He has worked to build institutional capacity, enabling organizations and communities alike to sustain reforms long after projects end. His professional background in sociology, along with specialized training in conflict management, participatory development, and results-based management, has shaped his holistic perspective.
Collaboration for Impact:
No development professional works in isolation. Over the past two and a half decades, Hassan has collaborated with UN agencies, donors, NGOs, and government departments. His strength lies in building relationships that promote trust and accountability. This has enabled him to influence policy discussions, foster partnerships, and ensure that development efforts are not just temporary interventions but part of a larger, sustainable change.
Work in Karachi’s WASH Sector:
Until recently, Hassan served as a Social Reforms Specialist under the World Bank–funded Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP), implemented by NRSP. In this role, he developed policies and strategies to improve equitable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, with a strong focus on social inclusion. His work emphasized empowering marginalized and vulnerable groups, including women, persons with disabilities, and the transgender community. Through extensive community mobilization, the formation of CBOs, and the strengthening of local leadership, Hassan contributed to inclusive, community-driven solutions.
