The Karachi Press Club is not merely a building, a collection of rooms, or a gathering place for journalists; rather, it stands as a significant symbol of Pakistan’s journalistic history, democratic traditions, freedom of expression, and the collective identity of the journalistic community. The importance of this institution can be gauged by the fact that every activity, every election, and every democratic process that takes place here reflects the collective thought and consciousness of the journalistic community. The annual elections of the Karachi Press Club are also a part of this democratic continuity. These elections are not merely about securing positions or competing between different panels; rather, they serve as a significant opportunity to evaluate past performance, collective service, the trust of the members, and future courses of action. For the past twenty years or so, "The Democrats Panel” has maintained its presence and engagement within the electoral activities and administrative affairs of the Karachi Press Club. This two-decade-long journey represents more than just the passage of time; it signifies a sustained commitment to an institution, ongoing engagement with its members, and a long-standing contribution to the collective life of the journalistic community. The true identity of any organization or electoral panel is defined not by its claims, but by its practical performance, conduct, relationship with its members, and the services it has rendered to the institution. In this context, the past twenty-year journey of "The Democrats Panel” should also be viewed and evaluated. It is a significant fact that the trust of Karachi Press Club members cannot be earned in a single day. Doing so requires consistent engagement, mutual consultation, an understanding of the members’ concerns, the ability to convey their voices to the relevant forums, and a commitment to prioritizing the collective interests of the institution. Today, the journalistic community faces a range of challenges, including economic hardships, editorial pressure, job insecurity, the non-payment of salaries, layoffs within media organizations, and issues concerning freedom of the press. Under such circumstances, the responsibilities of the Press Club’s administrative leadership and elected representatives increase significantly. Electoral success alone is not enough; in fact, the real test begins only after the election. A notable aspect of the twenty-year journey of "The Democrats Panel” is that, throughout this period, members of the Karachi Press Club have—by exercising their democratic right—expressed their opinions and placed their trust in the panel across various terms. This trust should be viewed as a responsibility, rather than an inherent right or the exclusive legacy of any particular group. In my view, for the development and stability of the Karachi Press Club, it is essential that all panels acknowledge each other’s existence, differences of opinion and democratic rights. There must be electoral competition, but personal antagonism, factional division and unnecessary bitterness should be avoided. Ultimately, all candidates and panels are part of the same journalistic community that the Karachi Press Club represents. The twenty-year commitment of “The Democrats Panel” requires that it review its past journey, One should present one’s services and achievements to the members, accept the identification of shortcomings, and propose a more effective, transparent, and accountable strategy for the future. In the annual elections of the Karachi Press Club, the primary focus should not be on any single panel, but rather on the honor, dignity, and independence of the institution, as well as the rights of its members. Whoever assumes responsibility must remember that the Press Club is not the property of any individual, group, or panel; rather, it is a collective asset of the entire journalistic community. A twenty-year journey is certainly an honor, but, even more so, it is a responsibility. Sustained trust is maintained not merely through past contributions, but through tangible performance in the future. May Allah Almighty ensure that the Karachi Press Club remains vibrant, strong, and autonomous—a true center for the unity and solidarity of the journalistic community. It has been my personal observation and experience that the candidates elected from "The Democrats Panel” have—through their excellent service, strategic planning, and successful agendas—effectively tailored their contributions to meet the evolving demands and needs of the times. "The Democrats Panel” at the Karachi Press Club has provided numerous services for journalists and their families, including the organization of recreational activities and competitive events with substantial prizes—initiatives that have continued consistently to this day. The Karachi Press Club is recognized—not only within Pakistan but also internationally—as a prominent and distinguished institution, renowned for its highly organized structure and exceptional performance. A testament to its stature is the overwhelming confidence placed in "The Democrats Panel” by a large number of journalists during the club’s annual elections. For their part, "The Democrats Panel”—which boasts a twenty-year track record of success—has consistently proven its worth through exemplary service. Above all, the discipline and patience demonstrated by "The Democrats Panel,” along with their success in keeping the club vibrant and lively, reflect an exceptional level of grace and skill. It is to the credit of "The Democrats Panel” that, while keeping pace with the times, they have organized programs for journalists that align with the demands of the modern era. Whether it was a formal gathering, a meeting, or a meal, great care was taken to ensure everything was conducted with proper decorum and refinement. Nevertheless, should any minor oversight or error have occurred, friends from the opposing panel ought to exercise forbearance—after all, to err is human. The successful candidates from "The Democrats Panel” not only acknowledge their mistakes and offer remedies but are also grateful to those who bring such matters to their attention. While there have been occasional complaints regarding the canteen staff, we should also pause to consider that the staff members serving us may be grappling with serious personal difficulties; their silence—stemming from a sense of self-respect—might simply be a reflection of a preoccupied or troubled state of mind. In any case, I believe it is the moral responsibility of us all to acknowledge, encourage, and support "The Democrats Panel” for their positive and constructive contributions. It should be noted that the Karachi Press Club often deals with various matters—including those concerning the personal affairs of journalists—in which "The Democrats Panel” plays an effective role, doing its utmost to help find solutions. — Jawed Siddiqui, Journalist and Columnist; Member, Karachi Press Club; Member, Karachi Union of Journalists (Dastoor)…..!!
