In the heart of Essa Nagri, a new wave of enthusiasm and commitment has emerged with the formation of the WASH Club, where WASH stands for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. This initiative, involving a group of 11 dedicated young girls, aims to transform their community by making Essa Nagri cleaner and greener. The children are playing a proactive role in addressing water-related issues and improving local sanitation.
The launch event, held at the Ministries of Holy Spirit International Church, showcased the children’s motivation and passion. The WASH Club is a collaborative effort between the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) and the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP).
KWSSIP, funded by the World Bank, focuses on addressing Karachi’s water and sewage challenges through targeted infrastructure investments and policy reforms. NRSP, with its extensive outreach and experience in community development, supports urban infrastructure improvements, including this WASH initiative.
The WASH Club members will engage in a variety of simple and impactful activities to improve their community. These include organizing clean-up drives to remove litter from public areas, setting up recycling stations to promote waste segregation, and educating their peers on the importance of handwashing and hygiene. They will also participate in tree-planting events to enhance green spaces and help maintain clean water sources by promoting the proper disposal of waste.
Shackaib Shahid, a Community Facilitator with KWSSIP-NRSP, shared his enthusiasm about the formation of the WASH Club, noting the effort it took to engage these young girls. He meticulously worked with their parents to gain their trust and support, leading to the successful establishment of the club. His dedication underscores the importance of community involvement in tackling local issues.
Community Mobilizers Qanddel Alam and Awais ur Rehman emphasized their commitment to further developing the children’s capacities within the WASH Club. They are focused on providing ongoing training and support to ensure that the children can make an even greater impact on their community.
Syed Hassan Ahmad, Social Reforms and Community Development Specialist, announced plans to expand the initiative, stating that more WASH Clubs will be established in Essa Nagri and Soba Nagar as part of the KWSSIP-NRSP intervention areas. This expansion will further enhance the reach and effectiveness of the WASH program.
Through these efforts, the WASH Club in Essa Nagri represents a beacon of hope and a model for how young people can drive positive change in their communities.
